The patrol has been using EFS suspension for years now. It's handled all of our trips to the Kimberley and Cape York. The EFS brand of suspension is built tough for the Australian environment and who better to put it through it's paces than Jase. The suspension has now proven it's worth on some of Australia's roughest roads like the Munja Track (Kimberley WA) and Cape Yorks infamous OTL (Over Land Telegraph Track). The boat trailer which goes everywhere as well has been set up with a custom EFS suspension Kit. From the Heavy duty coils and big bore shocks EFS is the only suspension that has lasted the Jase test. Website: www.efs4wd.com.au
Here’s a tip for you, the clouds are out and the solar panels aren’t putting much power into your auxiliary battery system what do you do? Get your hands on the Waeco 25 amp battery charger, with a Honda generator you hook up the battery charger and it will pump into your battery 25 amps every hour until it’s full. This charger will charge a flat battery. So you can start the car in 4 mins. www.waeco.com.au
The trip to the Northern Territory was not without its problems but before I left I had the boys from Roo Systems tune all the 4wdrives. The Patrol had a new exhaust system installed and tuned on the dyno increasing the HP to 135 at the rear wheels. The Toyota Landcrusier had a Roo Sysyems Chip and exhaust installed giving it 180 hp at the rear wheels and better fuel efficiency. The Patrol had so much more grunt and torque, it was very noticeable when I had to pull out the Landcrusier from the bog hole at Lorrella Springs. For more info www.4wdchip.com.au
Tyre choice is very important when you travel into the places that we do. Cape York has some diverse terrain from sticky black soil to sharp rocky country And endless sandy beaches. The BFGoodrich mud terrain is what we rely on to do our trips. The tyre pressures are also just as important, by reducing the air pressures in your Tyre in can greatly increase the traction. Even on the dirt roads you can drop the air pressures down 5 to 6 psi depending on the load of the 4x4. When you hit the sand you can drop them down to as low as 18 psi and this will make it easer to drive and stop from getting bogged as much, and of course don’t forget the trailers tyres. www.bfgoodrich.com.au
Dynamic Solar Solutions: Solar power is a great way to keep your 12 volt system powered up when you are out in the bush. The main thing to remember is that you have a big enough panel to supply the amps to the dual batteries. We use two 120 Watt solar panels which supply in full sun around 14 amps. Don’t forget that you will need a regulator between the panel and the battery or it can over charge the battery and damage it. For the best advice and setup the boys at DSS will look after you. www.dynamicsolarsolutions.com.au
The tip to staying safe in the remote Australian bush is to have good usable communication. The Iridium satellite phone and spot device are two Ways to give you the peace of mind in the bush. The satellite phone which is just like using a normal mobile phone, only it can get a signal anywhere. The spot device is a more cost effective solution. The spot Satellite GSP Messenger gives you a line of communication with friends and family when you want it, and emergency when and where you need it. Ask for help (or spot assist), S.O.S, check-in/OK and Track Progress all with the simple push of a button. www.pivotel.com.au
This book is the one thing that we don’t leave home without when we travel in the remote northern Australian region. It is a detailed guide to fishing and Boating in the top end. The book is full of detailed aerial maps and information of where to fish and how to get there. This information is what allows us to plan our trip up north. www.fishfinderbooks.com
The patrol has been fitted with the ultimate top mount intercooler from Cross Country. The unit is 4 times the size of the standard Nissan intercooler and bolts straight up to where the standard one sits. The sheer size of this intercooler is what produces the HP and torque. The patrol is running at around 135hp at the rear wheels, the intercooler keeps the air cool so it can get this HP. The patrol is more drivable and has some awesome low down grunt which I need when towing the 2 tonne boat. For more info on this product go to their website www.crosscountry4x4.com.au
The one thing we have learnt while travelling and towing big boats through northern Australia is that when the temperature hits over 38 degrees the standard cooling system cannot handle it. So here is a tip replace your standard radiator with a bigger aluminium one. The purpose built aluminium radiator is designed to handle the hotter conditions that we experience in the north over summer. The extra weight of the trailer and the tinnie on the roof puts a lot of strain on standard equipment. The aluminium radiator is bigger and more efficient. www.pwr.com.au
The Black widow draw system and cargo barrier was installed into the back of the Nissan Patrol and the Prado. The draw system make storage in the back so much easier, less clutter more available space. The trip to the Northern Territory was a great test for the gear and it did well. I would highly recommend installing a set of draws for your next trip up north. For more info on Black Widows great gear go to their website. www.blackwidow4wdstorage.com
Turn Night into Day that’s what I tell people, when they ask me about the lights on the 4wd’s. The led light bars are awesome for driving at night on outback roads. I have a set of 8in HID’s on the front of the Patrol with a 20 in led light bar. The HID’s are for range and the light bar is for all round lighting of the road out in front and to the side. Outstanding on bush tracks at night. For more info www.4wdchip.com.au
The boat loader that we have on the roof of the patrol has to be one of the best Boat Loaders we have seen, it loads up our 3.6 m tinnie easily.
When you spend as much time as us sleeping in a swag in some of Australias most hostile environments you need a good swag. The swag from Southern CrossCanvas is awesome. It is fully water proof and insect proof just great for those tropical locations we visit. The beauty of the swag is, it is your tent and bed in one. When we travel we don't stay in the same place to long so it's easy to set up and pack away. www.southerncrosscanvas.com.au
The patrol was fitted with two Long Ranger fuel tanks which replaced the two standard tanks in the patrol this increased our diesel fuel capacity to 215lts. The extra fuel in the tanks meant we didn't have to carry extra diesel in jerry cans. The centre of gravity on the patrol was reduced greatly, this being a big advantage when we travelled the OTL (Over Land Telegraph Track) at the Cape. www.thelongranger.com.au
There are a couple of products that stand out for us, the Wanderer range. We use their air mattress and camping chairs. The air mattress we put into our swags to reduce the bulk of having a thick mattress made of foam. The air mattress can roll up very thin but when they are rolled out they become thick and comfy. This is gold when you sleep in the swag for over a month at a time. The chairs as well are compact and light good for taking in the 4wd and the boat. A lot a thought goes into what will work and what won't try some of these ideas. www.bcf.com.au
The two things we need from the outboards we use is fuel efficiency and reliability. Honda has both of those points. The 150hp on the big boat is so reliable that we don't carry an auxiliary engine. The weight of an auxiliary can be replaced with fuel to go further. Our tinnie has the 20hp on it, this 4 stroke has the ability to go twice the distance on the same amount of fuel as a 2 stroke. The Honda generator is just as efficient as the outboards coupled with the 25 amp WAECO battery charger this covers all our needs. www.hondamarine.com.au
The one thing about us when we go fishing on our Adventures is that we punish our fishing gear. So what stands out for us it's got to be the Live Fibre Texalium Rods. We have caught everything from big barra to huge sharks on as small as a 4kg stick and it handles the lot. If you are flicking lures all day you don't want heavy rods so we use very strong light rods. The fishing reel range from wilson is also as tough as their rods. www.wilsonfishing.com
We always travel with few knives they come in handy for fishing hunting and if you ever get caught in a survival situation. Hand made good quality knives from Kizlyar. We use their LED torches they have to be the most powerful Handheld LED touches we have ever seen for their size. Have a look at their website www.kizlyar.com.au and if you watch the show you will see the LED head lamps we use they are great. www.kizlyarknifestore.com.au |
